About us

HollowCamp is an editorial guide for first-time campers: who is behind it, how we choose, and how we are funded.

Updated on October 7, 2026

HollowCamp is an editorial guide for camping and the outdoors — not a shop. We do not sell gear. We help you find the right gear.

Planning your first night outside and unsure what you actually need? That is exactly what this site is for. We sort through the market, check the specs, and write down what matters — in plain language and without a sales pitch.

What you will find here

  • Beginner guides – what you actually need for your first night camping
  • Gear lists – sorted by season and occasion, from a basic set to cold-weather kit
  • Comparisons – models side by side, with the values that matter
  • Practical know-how – cold, rain, wind and how to deal with them

Who is behind this

HollowCamp is run by an editorial team, not a single person. That is why we write "we" and not "I": what stands here should hold for the whole team and remain verifiable.

We do not run our own testing lab and we do not invent hero stories. Our job is a different one — we prepare the information you need to make a buying decision.

Principle: we do not claim anything we cannot back up.

How we choose

Our recommendations rest on verifiable information, not on feelings:

BasisExample
Standards and labelsTemperature ratings to ISO 23537-1 for sleeping bags, valve standard EN 417 for gas cartridges
Technical valuesR-value for sleeping pads, hydrostatic head in millimetres for tents
Manufacturer specificationsWeight, packed size and material — as officially stated
Value for moneyWe compare within a price bracket, not across it

If a specification looks implausible or is missing entirely, we say so.

What we do not do

  • We do not claim to have tested every item ourselves. Where we could not check something, we say so.
  • We do not sell placements or good reviews.
  • We do not use superlatives without evidence. Words like "the best" you will not find here.

How we are funded

HollowCamp is free for you. If you buy through one of our links, we receive a commission from the retailer — this does not change the price you pay.

Such links are labelled; the details are in our Affiliate Disclosure. The contracting party in any purchase is always the respective retailer, not us.
